Julie Walker, Founder and Executive Director of the WLC :
I have been a public school educator for over 30 years. During this time, I have been blessed to work for some of the best school districts in Michigan. I have worked along side educators with amazing minds and hearts. I have taught and supported thousands of children. These colleagues and children have helped shape who I am today and to inspire my dream. My dream is to create a place where children can come after school and throughout the summer to learn and develop as readers and writers. This space will be a community where we expect great things from each other. We teach kids to identify their strengths, set achievable goals, and provide them the support they need to reach their potential. Our goal at the WLC, is to find the potential that exists in the communities that we serve, and help to strengthen it. If we work together, we can create more equitable education opportunities for all children. Together for kids, Julie LaBurn |
About the Walker Literacy Center
For decades, Detroit schools have struggled to provide children the most basic building block of education: quality literacy instruction. The Walker Literacy Center will provide children, ages 6-10 years, an after school experience to help them build the skills they need to be successful.
